A 23-year-old woman, Agnes Akwero, from Owiny-Kibul in Magwi County committed suicide on Sunday, after quarreling with her husband.

In an interview with The City Review on Monday, the Eastern Equatoria State Police Spokesperson, Major General Justine Cleupus Takuru, said the woman ingested some chemicals after a quarrel with her husband.

“The husband went to the area chief to report immediately the woman had ingested the chemical, but when he came back, she had already died. He then went to record a statement at the police station in Owiny-Kibul. He was then brought to Magwi County,” Maj. Gen Takuru said.

The man admitted having disagreements with his wife over family issues in the morning before the incident.

“He confessed to having had issues with the wife in the morning with his wife. The issue was concerning food. He said he had quarreled the wife over preparing food for the children late, but this may have offended the woman, who swallowed the harmful chemical when the man left the house,” the police spokesperson narrated the man’s statement.

He said they were yet to confirm the nature of chemical the woman ingested, even as investigations into the matter continue

“We are yet to establish the kind of drug that she might have consumed. The doctor said he will give a full report, which will form part of our investigations,” he added.

According to the authorities, cases of suicide are rampant across Eastern Equatoria State. Last month, at least three people were reported to have committed suicide in Magwi County alone.
