The outgoing Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has said the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) should demonstrate a sense of urgency to accomplish the critical pending tasks. 

In his statement during the plenary meeting on Thursday, Ambassador Maj Gen Charles Tai Gituai stated the RTGoNU should demonstrate a sense of urgency to accomplish the critical pending tasks for the conduct of credible, peaceful, free, and fair democratic elections.

Gituai noted that the key tasks whose non-implementation necessitated the extension include the unification of forces and their redeployment, the making of the permanent constitution, and preparations for the conduct of credible elections.

“As we commence the 24 months of the extension, the election date of December 2026 may seem distant. However, my assessment of the critical milestones required to lay ground for credible elections indicates that there is no moment to waste,” he remarked.

Amb. Gituai highlighted that the key tasks that non-implementation necessitated this extension remain incomplete.

“It is our expectation that the RTGoNU will demonstrate to this plenary how it intends to fast-track implementation of these tasks within the stipulated timeline,” Gituai stated.  

The RJMEC is tasked with the monitoring and overseeing the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and the mandate and tasks of the RTGoNU, including the adherence of the parties to the agreed timelines and implementation of the schedule.
