The food items had been looted by criminals in Alek North and Alek South Payams, Gogrial West County

The Governor of Warrap State, Magok Magok Deng, through the state Minister of Cabinet Affairs Agem Akotdit Madut, officially handed over 800 recovered bags of sorghum to the World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday.

The food items had been looted by criminals in Alek North and Alek South Payams, Gogrial West County, on January 17, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Madut expressed gratitude to the community for their responsible decision.

“On behalf of the Governor of Warrap State, I extend appreciation to the community for their well-thought decision of recovering and returning 800 bags of sorghum that were looted from the WFP trailer,” he said.

He further emphasized the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the WFP.

“The Warrap State Government recognizes the role WFP is playing in our community, and it is important to maintain confidence in our relationship to continue.”

The Commissioner of Gogrial West County, Victor Wek Aru, recalled the unfortunate looting incident and commended those who helped in the recovery.

“I appreciate the efforts applied by the County RRC Coordinator and WFP Management for being patient throughout the process,” he said.

He urged the youth to always collaborate with humanitarian agencies and traders in the area.

“I appeal to the youth to cooperate with NGOs, traders, and foreigners working in our territory. We can establish peace and cement our unity. I also warn the youth against committing crimes against humanitarian agencies,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, Anyar Mabior, the Acting Chairperson for the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), lauded the community and local authorities for their collaboration.

 “I express my gratitude to the community for their actions and thank the County Administration for exhibiting good cooperation,” he stated.

Haile Selassie, a representative of the WFP, praised the people of Alek North and Alek South Payams for their commitment to peace and partnership with WFP.

 “I thank the communities of Alek North and Alek South Payams for their dedication and demonstration of cooperation with WFP,” he said.

 He further commended the local government for its support.

“I celebrate the role played by the Government through RRC and the local authorities and pledge more diversified and context-specific support to the community,” he added.

Sultan Akec Malek Akot reaffirmed the community’s dedication to peace and collaboration with humanitarian organizations.

“Our community is rooting for peace and cooperation between UN agencies and other humanitarian agencies,” he stated. He also highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian support.

“Many families are affected by widespread hunger, and we are anticipating support from WFP,” he noted.

“The Warrap State Government recognizes the role WFP is playing in our community, and it is important to maintain confidence in our relationship to continue,” Commissioner of Gogrial West County, Victor Wek Aru, said.
