The Greater Equatoria Land Alliance has conducted its first Extra Ordinary General Assembly and election for the alliance’s board members.
It is the first assembly since the establishment of the Land Alliance in 2017.
Wol Thieu, the Chief Registrar at the national Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Office said the Alliance aimed to serve the people of Greater Equatoria on issues related to land and other humanitarian needs.
He praised the Alliance for setting a good example to other regions as well as establishing clear goals that were set right at the beginning of the formation of the regional group.
“We have a list of all the organizations from the Greater Equatorial regions and because of this commitment you have shown, we are also going to commit ourselves to work with each organization,” he stated.
Chanjouk Armet, the chairperson of the electoral body disclosed that previous disputes in the leadership had hindered the work of the Alliance.
“I think we resolved this issue and it is good that the two sides came up with a make-up of a resolution and they said that it is better that the process of election to be taken by RRC,” he added.
The Greater Equatoria Land Alliance has decried the lack of awareness and a policy to regulate land use in the communities in Eastern Equatoria State capital, Torit.
Some members said of the 80 percent of land-related issues, the victims are not aware of how to manage their land.
The failure in the implementation of the laws and policies was also a major factor and the government rush to use the Land Act, 2009, which does not give a clear policy on the regulation and the usage of land has led to rampant land grabbing across the country.
