The Russian Federation has expressed its readiness to help South Sudan develop its modes of transportation.
Speaking following his meeting with his Russian counterpart at the sidelines of Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, National Minister for Transport, Hon. Lam Akol announced that they agreed with Russia to work out common program so that in one week or month so that the issues can be made concrete and the possible areas could be made practical.
On his part, Zverev Dmitry, Russian Deputy Minister for Transport said Moscow will prepare a memorandum of understanding within a month to develop the projects necessary to be implemented in South Sudan.
Dmitry said Russia is interested in helping South Sudan develop rail ways, airways and river transport infrastructure.
During the period defined by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, South Sudan focused on reestablishing regional transport links and access to seaports as well as rehabilitating its ports, airstrips, and single rail line. The country also successfully liberalized the ICT sector.
However, the country’s infrastructure has remained in dismal state and relatively underdeveloped, with the road network being less invested in and the water and air transport infrastructure opened to a wide array of opportunities for investment.
