A traffic officer in Torit on Sunday committed suicide by hanging himself.

According to the authorities, the motive behind the suicide of by the officer remains unclear.

Mustafa Albino Zakaria, mayor of Torit town confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were underway to unpack the cause of the suicide.

“I am the one who sent the vehicle to bring the dead body. He is a traffic officer. They just found him in the morning after he had hanged himself. The motive up to now is not known,” the mayor added.

Meanwhile, the Acting Director of Traffic Police in the state, Col. Leonard Peter John expressed his heartfelt condolences and warned the officers against taking their own lives.

“If there is any traffic officer who has a problem, he/she should share them with others so that they can be helped. This can ensure you are out of such risks,” Col Peter said.

“This is to all our traffic officers, it is not good when a human being commits suicide.”

About five years ago, a 56-year-old man hanged himself in Torit town after quarrelling with his wife. The deceased, identified as Captain Tilla Paulino Phillip, was a member of the army’s disabled unit.

John Oromo, the deceased relative, confirmed that Cpt. Tilla had disagreements with his wife, but never shared his problems with relatives.

“For sure he [Tilla] had quarrelled with his wife and this woman is available. She had gone to the garden as if it was God’s plans and upon returning, she found the information,” he was quoted as saying.
