A local chief in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Makuach Kuol Makuach has urged his fellow traditional leaders to be exemplary to combating hunger in their area.

Chief Makuach, locally known as Makuachdit, made an appeal in the wake of reports of some families going hungry due to shortage of food.

 “We have good fertile land in the high land areas. And people are shying away from working on it. I have 7 feddans, after I reaped them, I got 30 sacks of groundnut which I am providing to my families.”

 “And I am helping others. So, why can’t we use this as an opportunity to fight hunger,” Makuach stated.

“I am appealing to the chiefs and the intellectual to explore the ways of fighting hunger.Through cultivating the lands. It can’t turn barren. Even if there is an issue of climatic changes which lead to lack of enough rain. Plant other crops like groundnuts, sesame, they won’t all fail.”

The chief blamed the local residents for depending on humanitarian assistances, saying they can do what it takes to change the trend of believing in the relief items.
